Why Are New Year’s Resolutions Important?
It’s that time of year again. January 1. This time of a brand new year is the perfect time to reflect on the year that has passed, and set new goals for the present.
Setting goals this time of year may seem too “mainstream” or ridiculous because society expects new year’s resolutions to fail, but this is really a shame. Goal setting is incredibly powerful, and should never be seen as a wasted activity.
Personal growth and accomplishment is something we all want, and arguably, need in our lives. If we never take the time to evaluate our current situation and make plans to improve, we will be depriving ourselves of a human need.
These are the 4 reasons we strongly suggest you set new year’s resolutions this year.
Taking Time to Reflect is Something We All Need
In order to set proper goals for the new year, it is important to reflect on the year that has passed and decide what we loved and what we didn’t love.
Reflecting on the people, the choices, and the events that made us happy will help us to set goals for the new year that will ensure further happiness in our lives.
We all can get caught up in the hamster wheel of life that we never actually take a moment to think about things. We simply catch ourselves feeling happy, or sad, or angry, or tired – for a fleeting moment and then keep on going with our busy lives.
Take the new year as a time to really think about the year that passed and how the year ahead can give you more time for health, happiness, friendships, love, excitement, and fulfillment.
Goal Setting is Powerful
We have written about goal setting and motivation a few times on the Free Form blog (1, 2) and how it can be incredibly effective for changing your life. All major leaders and successful individuals practice regular goal setting to keep them on track and to help them further progress their success.
If you want to find success in your health and wellness goals, think about what exactly you want to achieve.
If it is weight loss – how much?
If it is more energy – what for?
If it is better nutrition – what does better nutrition mean to you?
The more specific your goal, the more likely you are to achieve the goal.
Take Advantage of the “New Year, New Me” Motivational High
The fact of the matter is that this time of year the majority of people are out there feeling extra motivated to change their lives. Use that boost in motivation to get creative with your goals.
Part of successful goal setting is telling people who respect about what your goals are in order to secure accountability. When you are at your New Year’s celebrations, ask everyone what they are thinking for their resolutions and share yours.
By putting it out into the universe and sharing with the ones you care about, you are further cementing the goal in your mind.
Growth and Personal Challenges Will Make You More Happy this Year.
If more happiness is something you hope to achieve than the simple act of working towards a goal will achieve that.
Challenging ourselves and experiencing the little wins along the way are a surefire way to increase overall happiness. If you set yourself the kinds of goals that allow you to celebrate many little-wins along the way, then you are potentially looking at a whole year of continued happiness and success.
This is a Trend you should buy into
Although it may seem cheesy or silly to even bother with New Year’s resolutions, this is something that we should all be open and supportive of.
Goal setting should be happening throughout the whole year, but taking this time, when the global consciousness is focused on change and renewal, to set 1 or a few long-term goals is worth it.
Lastly, if you hear someone talking about their New Year’s resolutions and hear others shutting them down in that moment of vulnerability, stick up for them. A large part of why people miss out on this opportunity to set goals is because they are afraid of what other people will say.
This year be the person who cheers them on. Goals are more likely to be achieved when there are more people supporting the goal.
