Q & A: Loose Skin & Weight Loss
Q: My name is Diane, I have about 75lbs to lose and it scares me to think that I will have a ton of loose skin. I mean I’m 49 years old so I’m pretty sure it won’t come back to normal. Is there anything I can do to avoid this?
A: Let’s begin the conversation with one simple answer – you may have to consider some cosmetic surgery. 75lbs is a lot of weight and age does have an impact. There are many cases of people who have skin that has stretched to its limits and will never be able to return to its original tautness or firmness. This means that one of the first things you should do once you have reached your goal weight is to make an appointment with a dermatologist to discuss the condition of your skin. They are going to tell you if the next step is to book a visit with a cosmetic or plastic surgeon to see if your skin can be surgically improved.
There are also times when some people your age still have good elasticity in their skin and it bounces back well. Don’t let it stop you from losing weight. If you are losing weight and it starts to bother you, that’s when you are going to have to discuss the other options.
As you do this, remember that you should not get discouraged. For instance, if your only option is surgery, but you don’t want to do that, you have to accept that all health benefits are going to be far more important than the physical appearance of your old skin.
