It goes with the job – busy moms put everyone else before themselves.

But taking a little time to put yourself first can give you the get-up-and-go to be there more for others.

Vickie McNeil is a working mom with a three-year-old daughter and a seven-year-old son who’s busy with hockey in the winter and soccer in the summer. Between her kids and a desk job as program coordinator for a naval engineering firm, she really had no time for herself.

The days of her youth playing team sports and taking ballet and dance were long gone. At 40, she was already seeing the metabolic changes that left her with that extra padding where she didn’t want it. Taking the odd spin or aquafit class wasn’t enough.

But she didn’t care to hit the gym on her own either.

“Going to the gym on my own was too much time commitment,” she said. “You have to figure out what to do on the machines, classes take too long and they don’t deliver the results.”

Then Vickie’s husband started working with a personal trainer and suggested she give it a try. It wasn’t something Vickie had ever done before. She hadn’t even attempted weight training in decades.

But that didn’t stop her from taking advantage of the introductory package at the Free Form Fitness location near her home in the Glebe.

“I really didn’t know much about it but decided to come in one day and give it a try,” she said.

Since September, she’s been coming in twice a week. Vickie works with trainers Eric and Patrick who counsel her on fitness and nutrition. She used to suffer from back pain due to mild arthritis, and shoulder tightness and neck pain from too many hours at the desk. But Eric and Patrick have developed a tailored program that has made her leaner, stronger and pain free.

“I have mobility again,” she said. “I feel great. People at work are noticing I‘ve slimmed down. I’m fitting into clothes I haven’t in a long time. It’s a nice feeling when you don’t say anything but people notice a change.”

And the best part? Vickie just has to show up.

“You’re in you’re out and you don’t have to think about it,” she said. “The trainers tell you what to do and make sure you’re getting a full balanced workout. They even count the reps for you and make sure you’re doing it right to hit your targets.”

And she’s come to love weight training.

It’s second to none,” she said. “You just get faster results with less time.”

But the most important thing is the trust that has developed between trainer and client. This has led Vickie to realize she is capable of more than she thought.

“As they get to know you, they know what your limits are and when and where to push you,” she said. “They know what you can handle. I wouldn’t push myself the same way on my own. When I think I’ve got nothing left, they give that encouragement to help me finish those reps. Sometimes, they have more confidence in me than I do in myself.”
