Can Your Tongue Make You Stronger?

May 14, 2009

Try this experiment with a friend. Instruct your friend to hold their arms up so they are parallell to the ground. Now tell them to push their tongue to the bottom of their jaw. Now add pressure downwards trying to bring their arms to his side of there body while they resist. Be aware of how easy it was on a scale of 1-10.

Now repeat it but this time tell them to do the same thing except with their tongue pushing on the top of their mouth. Make sure to add the same amount of pressure.

Ta da! You should see that when they push there tongue to the top of there palette, that it's much harder to bring there arms down. This happens because the tongue helps stabilize the neck and helps recruit more muscle to help resist the load. Keep that in mind when you lift weight!
